Best Spincast Reel – Top Spincast Reels Compared (Reviews and Buyer’s Guide)

Choosing the best spincast reel should boil down to the same universal attributes that you would choose when looking to buy a spinning reel or a baitcasting reel. When looking at any reel to purchase the following should be used to weigh up your options from the seemingly endless choices out there for good fishing reels

  • Affordability
  • Quality
  • Suitability
  • Ease of use

What is a spincast reel?
A spincast fishing reel or closed face reel as it is otherwise known differs from a normal open face or spinning reel in that it's spool is enclosed in a dome housing and there is no bail arm. It's kind of like a hybrid between a spinning reel and baitcasting reel.
Types of spincast reel:

  • Push button reel
  • Trigger spincast reel

The reason why a closed face reel is preferred by beginners and children is because there is a much smaller learning curve when learning how to cast with them. When teaching children how to fish the less time that is spent on failed casts and the more time that is spent actually fishing or retrieving a lure the better.

You can spend a huge amount of time online trying to find a suitable reel for your needs. If you are a beginner fisherman and looking for a spincast reel and you are unsure of what to look for or even the experienced angler looking for a backup or something light to fit in a backpack we hope there is something from the following list of top spincast reels.

One of the cheapest spincast reels that is available today the Shakespeare Synergy is one of the smallest reels also. If you are planning on taking some fishing gear into the back country on long hikes then this little reel will stow away perfectly in your backpack.

Although it may not have the more advanced features or materials this closed face reel is not going to break the bank for it's price point. • One ball bearing
  • Titanium line guide
  • 4.1:1 gear ration
  • Pre-spooled with 70 yards of 4lbs line.

What to Look for in a Spincast Reel

Here are some important considerations to look our for in a spin casting reel. The best spincasting reels from reputable manufacturers all contain quality materials and are generally well designed.

Materials

The majority of spincast fishing reels are built from some sort of metal. The housing is either some kind of cast metal alloy or aluminum. You should generally steer clear of any of the cheaper spincast reels that are built out of plastic. These plastic reels will not only break very easily but over time the performance of the reel will degrade as the plastic becomes worn and it will begin to twist and flex easier.

Gearing

You should look for a reel that has a gear ratio of somewhere between 3.0:1 and 4.5:1. Any lower or higher than the stated range and you will either have too low a retrieval speed(for the lower ratio) or you will see a compromise in the amount of power that you can get out of the reel(for the higher ratio) as you crank the handle. Gearing ratio's are all about striking a balance between power and retrieval speed, stay within that range and you should be fine.

Drag

There are usually two types of drag systems available. Star drag which which is a large circular knob between the reel handle and the body or an internal drag that usually places the knob at the back of the reel on the body. There is no right or wrong choice between the two and generally it will come down to a matter of preference.

Ball Bearings

Like any good quality reel the best kinds of bearings for the running gear to sit in will be stainless ball bearings. Some of the lesser quality fishing reels can come with old style bushings and to be honest they should be avoided. Some models with come with only one ball bearing and generally it will not run as smooth as a reel with a lot more the Zebco for instance has seven ball bearings and it is incredibly smooth in its operation, that is why it is the best closed face reel available for the money.

What Kind of Line for a Spincast Reel?

Probably the best choice is ordinary monofilament especially for a beginner fisherman. Braided fishing line can suffer from whats called "dig in" due to it's much smaller diameter compared to mono. The braided fishing line if wound down too tight against a heavy lure or fish will dig into the strands of braid beneath in on the spool. This will then result in the line jamming on itself making the reel useless, you will then need to spend considerable time carefully teasing out the line to fix it.
